2. INTRODUCTION
2.1 What is ESP?
ESP is centered on the language appropriate to the activities of a given
discipline. ESP according to Hutchinson and Waters (1987:19), “ESP is an
approach to language teaching in which all decisions as to content and method
are based on the learner’s reason for learning.” In this connection,
Dudley-Evans (1998) explains that ESP may not always focus on the language for
one specific discipline or occupation, such as English for Law, English for
Economic, or English for Engineering.
Dudley-Evans and St John (1998) modified Strevens’ definition of ESP:
A. Absolute Characteristics:
a) ESP
is designed to meet specific needs of the learner
b) ESP
makes use of the underlying methodology and activities of the disciplines it
serves
c) ESP
is centered on the language (grammar, lexis, register), skills, discourse and
genres appropriate to these activities.
B. Variable Characteristics:
a) ESP
may be related to or designed for specific disciplines
b) ESP
may use, in specific teaching situations, a different methodology from that of
General English
c) ESP
is likely to be designed for adult learners, either at a tertiary level
institution or in a professional work situation. It could, however, be for
learners at secondary school level
d) ESP
is generally designed for intermediate or advanced students.
e) Most
ESP courses assume some basic knowledge of the language system, but it can be
used with beginners.
How is English
for Specific Purposes (ESP) different from English as a Second
Language (ESL), also known as general English?
The most important difference lies in the learners and their purposes for
learning English. ESP students are usually adults who already have some
acquaintance with English and are learning the language in order to communicate
a set of professional skills and to perform particular job-related functions.
An ESP program is therefore built on an assessment of purposes and needs and
the functions for which English is required .
ESP concentrates more on language in context than on teaching grammar and
language structures. It covers subjects varying from accounting or computer
science to tourism and business management. The ESP focal point is that English
is not taught as a subject separated from the students' real world (or wishes);
instead, it is integrated into a subject matter area important to the learners.
As a matter of fact, ESP combines subject matter and English language
teaching. Such a combination is highly motivating because students are able to
apply what they learn in their English classes to their main field of study,
whether it be accounting, business management, or economics. Being able to use
the vocabulary and structures that they learn in a meaningful context
reinforces what is taught and increases their motivation.
The term "specific" in ESP refers to the specific purpose for
learning English. Students approach the study of English through a field that
is already known and relevant to them. This means that they are able to use
what they learn in the ESP classroom right away in their work and studies. The
ESP approach enhances the relevance of what the students are learning and
enables them to use the English they know to learn even more English, since
their interest in their field will motivate them to interact with speakers and
texts.

ANALYSIS OF THE TEXTBOOK
3.1 Faculty of
Economic University of Lancang Kuning
University of Lancang Kuning has 9 faculties, one of
them is Faculty of Economic. Faculty of Economic has 2 majors, Management and
Accountancy. Based on the survey, each major has at least 200 students and they
have different background study. They came from Senior High School or
Vocational High School and most of them came from the different place, age,
sex, and cultural background. Eventhough the came from the different background
of study such as from Vocational High School they took engineering major, design, architecture, and so on, but most of
them have a same purpose why they’ve been choose Economic as their faculty. The
students who choose Economic as their faculty wish after they graduated they can
work in the Bank, marketing, become an accountant, an economist, businessmen,
or become professors. Because economics is arguably flexible.
3.2 Why are the learners Taking English Course?
As we know that nowdays english is one of the most
important language in this world especially for the globalization era. Most of
countries use english as their language, either first language or second
language. English had become
international language, which all aspects used it. There are so many reasons
why ESP must be learned by the people especially for university or vocational
students. One of the reason is, English is the most commonly used language
among foreign language speakers. Throughout the world, when people with different
languages come together they commonly use English to communicate. It's true that they've been learning english from Elementary
School up to Senior High School, but the fact one is that they learned about
general english only. They learned about alphabet untill tenses in english.
But, after they went to the university and learned about english, it may be
different with english in elementary, junior, and senior high school. Because,
in university they are going to learn about english for specific purpose. In
other hand, if the lecturer gives a materials that isn’t match with their
major, they do not understand what english they will used in Economic or
Business world, what vocabularies are used to, how to make right communication
in Economic or Business language.
Developing
English for Special Purpose (ESP) for Economis students in Universities today
is a must, because of the development of global market that make it possible
for foreign companies entering Indonesian market places. By the introduction of
global marketing, and as a result of the internet technology developments, it
makes everyone has an access for international market through internet
facilities. As a result of this, Indonesian government has established english
course in Universities in order to anticipate the effects of the internet
development.
Based on the statement above, University of Lancang
Kuning gives english subject in order to push the students’ ability of using
english and hope that after graduated from the university and got bachelor
degree, the students have skills of english at least how to use english on
their work that related to English for Economic and anticipate the effects of
the global market and internet development.
ESP material refers to the needs of students
(students' needs) and the graduates themselves. The same thing was said by Mc
Donough on definitions and concepts ESP. He argues "ESP Reviews those are courses where the syllabus and materials are determined
in all essentials by prior analysis of the communication needs of the learners.".
Donough’s
opinion indicates that the materials, syllabus and objectives of the ESP should
be designed and developed based on the needs of students. It means that in this
case, the materials, syllabus, and the objectives should be designed and
developed based on the needs of the students in Faculty of Economic in
University of Lancang Kuning so they can learned english that appropriate or match
with their major (Economic) and their needs.
Lecturing
proccess in this Faculty, the lecture gave an English Textbook (Module) complete with explanations. This
textbook given by the lecture for the students in order to make easier for
them, easy on how to indicate the vocabularies and the students will ask
questions when they do not understand what does it mean. So that this Textbook
makes easy understanding for the students.
As a Economic students, it is important to see theirself
as a developing professional in their particular discipline. In order to be
such a professional, they need to sound and act like a practitioner who can
express themselves articulately to peers. Indeed, individual consultations have
highlighted that students need to be more precise and accurate in their
communication. And English for Economic Students wil help them to have a good
communication in english especially. In brief, the answer of Why ae the learners taking the English
Course? because it is a compulsory not an option.
3.3 The Analysis
of ESP by Looking their English Textbook
Before the writer give an opinion about this
textbook, the writer wants to show up what references that used in this
textbook. Actually there are five references here:
Azar, Betty,S, Understanding
and Using English Grammar, 1998, USA: Prentice Hall.
Mack, Angela, The
Language of Business, 1975, UK: British Broadcasting and Corporation.
McArthur, Tom, A
Rapid Course in English for Students of Economic, 1990, Oxford.
Mead, Richard, English
for Economics, 1985, Great Britain: Longman.
Methold,K and J. Tadman, Office to Office: Practical Business Communication, Longman.
Based on references above, you should be thought
that “the textbook must be appropriate
with the economic major”, ”is this textbook might be used for them? Is it appropriate
with their major?” Am I right?
The answer is
Yes. This textbook actually has good materials, compatible exercise, and good
explanations are given by the lecture in this textbook. For the cover of this
textbook, full of title and references. For the second page, the paper full of

end, the paper full of materials about Grammar in English. The lecture gives
and examples by using the vocabularies or phrases that related in Economic
Language. For example: Ownership,
Investment, Economic, Management, Logical Calculation, Business, etc. Everyone
believes that those vocabularies support the students’ skill on how they used
english in their future, especially after they graduated then they looking for
a job. ESP is the most important one.
Therefore, ESP materials such as
texts and exercises are very important. This textbook has so many short articles about economic
and used as an example that the lecture gave, in order to make the students
easy understand about English for Economic Students eventhough they learned
about Grammar in English.

DIFFERENT
ECONOMIC SYSTEM
Not all economic system is the same. The economic system of the USA differs greatly from the system of the
USSR. The American system is based on private enterprise with private ownership of the means of production, while Russian system is communistic and is based upon the
principle of Karl Marx the 19th century political
economist. The economic ideologies of these two nations contrast very
strongly.
Britain is similar to the USA. It has
an economic system based on private enterprise and private supplies of
capital, which can be defined as surplus income available for investment in new business activites.
Property in both the US and Britain can be owned by individual citizens and
the citizens exercise considerable economic
freedom of choice. They can
choose what they want to do and how they want to earn their living.
